![]() Plus with SCIV's story, Sophitia seemed poised to be the next bearer of Soul Edge, taking the sword to protect Pyrrha from dying. ![]() And seeing him take the soul sword, and the soul sword twisting him to do what it wishes just fascinated me. Thank you so much! I've actually always quite liked the "Vampire but not" angle they took Raph in, but more because I enjoyed following his motivations through the series. So yeah, these are excellent concepts that can spark a design path, so you're certainly in the right trade. In turn, this creates a perfect opportunity for Cassandra to seek out Soul Calibur, intent on finding a way to free her sister, and in the end destroying both swords because Cassandra doesn't trust ANYTHING: not the gods, not the soul swords, no one. Here is a girl who believed that any sacrifice was worthwhile in the name of serving the gods, but it's entirely possible to see the narrative that Soul Edge could corrupt Sophitia by showing her that the gods had forsaken her after she'd done their work for them and defeated Cervantes. Thus, this notion of Sophitia, the original purehearted girl of the series, being corrupted by the Soul Edge is something I can buy. Pyrrha's corruption is interesting because she doesn't take on the qualities normally associated with "bad girls" like being seductive or manipulative: she legit just wants to murder fools to get more souls. It just unlocks the monstrosity within and feeds it power. The dichotomy of the purehearted girl becoming a destructive force is powerful because it's a perfect mirror of Siegfried's own descent, and it shows that while Soul Edge will take a broken person and amplify their broken qualities, it doesn't add anything that isn't already there. Meanwhile, if there's one thing I loved about SCV that I wish had somehow been carried forward, it's the idea of another wielder of Soul Edge who demonstrates the same kind of physical warping that Siegfried experiences as Nightmare: Pyrrha takes the violent potential of Sophitia/Cassandra's sword and shield style and turns it up to eleven because of her monstrous transformation into Pyrrha Omega. It's a selfish reason to the very core, but it's exactly the kind of thing that Elysium attempted to latch onto when it took the form of Patroklos' mother and promised a peaceful world if he destroyed Soul Edge (and thus Pyrrha). If we extrapolate this into SCV to a certain extent, where the introduction of Elysium shows us more of what Soul Calibur would do if Soul Edge was out of the way, then I could see Raphael being perfectly willing to go along with it on the promise of a perfect world where nobility and crime and honor don't matter and he can simply exist joyfully with Amy. We know Project Soul has always given us reason to doubt Soul Calibur's nature as the "good" counterpart to Soul Edge's evil, but putting a weapon like that in the hands of Raphael, a man of questionable character, would double down on that debate. I say all this because the notion of this selfish antihero wielding the Good Guy Sword helps to lend more ambiguity to the conflict between the two soul swords. I gravitated much more towards the space of Raphael being an antihero who ended up doing the right thing for the wrong reasons: a prime example would be him ultimately causing the Soul Embrace by defeating Nightmare. Raphael's arc in becoming a soul-sucking vampire always irritated me because it played into some uninteresting tropes about vampires and the nobility. This is fantastic for a number of reasons but first let me compliment your lovely artwork.
